Dog supplements basics
Do dog supplements actually work?
Some do, some don't. It depends on the active ingredient, the dose, and what you're trying to address. Joint supplements with glucosamine, chondroitin, and green-lipped mussel have research backing them. Omega-3 for coat and skin has solid evidence. Calming ingredients like chamomile and L-tryptophan work cumulatively over weeks, not minutes. General multivitamins for a healthy dog on complete food rarely make a difference. Rule of thumb: pick a supplement with named active ingredients at meaningful doses, give it consistently for 6 weeks, then judge the effect.
Are dog supplements safe?
For most dogs, yes, if you stick to the recommended dose. The risks come from overdosing, unknown ingredients, and mixing with medication. Vitamin A and D can be toxic at high levels. Natural herbs aren't automatically safe. Valerian, hemp seed, and St. John's wort are active compounds that affect the dog's nervous system and liver. Always check the ingredient list, dose by your dog's weight, and ask your vet if your dog is on other medication. More is not better.
Does my dog need supplements?
Maybe not. A healthy adult dog on complete food covers the basics. Supplements make sense when there's a specific reason: joint problems in an older dog, itching and skin irritation that doesn't respond to a food change, stress and unease around fireworks or separation, or recovery after injury. Puppies and seniors can benefit from targeted support during certain phases. If your dog is healthy and on a complete diet, extras aren't necessarily needed. Supplements don't fix everything, and they don't replace a vet visit for serious symptoms.
Do vets recommend dog supplements?
Sometimes. Vets typically recommend supplements in specific situations: glucosamine and omega-3 for joint problems, omega-3 for skin barrier issues, probiotics for digestive problems. General multivitamins are rarely recommended for healthy dogs on a balanced diet. When a vet evaluates a supplement, they look for named active ingredients (not vague "herbal blends"), documented doses, and a manufacturer that can show what's in the bag. Our formulations are developed in collaboration with European vets. Always ask your own vet before adding anything new, especially if your dog is already on medication.
Do dogs get enough nutrition from food alone?
For a healthy adult dog on a high-quality complete diet: yes. A complete dog food is regulated to cover the basics for protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. That doesn't mean every dog at every life stage is fine without extras. Puppies in growth, pregnant females, older dogs, dogs with chronic conditions or stress, and dogs on raw or homemade diets can lack specific nutrients. Diet changes, illness, and high activity can also shift the need. Check what's on your food bag. If it says "complete," the basics are covered.
How to use dog supplements
How long do dog supplements take to work?
Depends on the supplement. Probiotics often show digestive changes in days. Omega-3 for skin and coat takes about 6 weeks. Joint supplements typically need 4-8 weeks for visible mobility changes, sometimes longer for older dogs. Calming ingredients work cumulatively over about 6 weeks of daily use. Don't judge a supplement on a few days. Give it 6 weeks of consistent daily use, then assess. If you see no change after 8-12 weeks, it's probably not the right product or the right dose for your dog.
Do calming chews work for dogs?
They can, if the ingredients are real and you give them daily for long enough. Calming chews work cumulatively, not like a sedative: expect 6 weeks of daily use before judging the effect, never instant results. LittleLegs Calm & Balance Chews use chamomile and L-tryptophan and are formulated to promote calm behavior without sedation or drowsiness. If you see no difference after consistent daily use, the 60-day money-back guarantee applies.
How often should I give my dog supplements?
Daily, on most products, unless the label says otherwise. Active ingredients build up in the body over time, and missing days drops the levels below what's needed for an effect. Consistency matters more than dose size. If you're forgetting, tie it to a routine like the morning meal, evening walk, or before bed. Treat-format chews are easiest to remember because dogs queue up for them.
How many chews can I give my dog per day?
Follow the dose on the label, scaled to your dog's weight. Our chews are dosed by weight bands: up to 10 kg gets 1 chew per day, 10-30 kg gets 2, and over 30 kg gets 3. Always follow the label on your specific product. Don't double up. More isn't faster, and fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D can cause issues at high doses. If your dog gets multiple supplements, count the totals. Overlap on something like omega-3 is fine, overlap on a fat-soluble vitamin is not.
How long does one bag last?
A bag is 60 chews, so it depends on your dog's weight. Dogs up to 10 kg (1 chew per day) get 60 days from a bag, dogs 10-30 kg (2 per day) get 30 days, and dogs over 30 kg (3 per day) get 20 days. Check the weight table on the bag for your specific product.
Should I give dog supplements with or without food?
Most are fine either way. Fat-soluble ingredients (omega-3, vitamins A, D, E, K) are absorbed better with a meal that contains some fat. Probiotics survive better when given between meals. For chews that taste like a treat, dogs usually take them on their own, so give them whenever it fits your routine. The key is daily, not the exact timing.
Can I give supplements with my dog's medication?
Sometimes, but check first. Some supplements interact with medication. St. John's wort can affect drug metabolism, omega-3 can mildly affect blood clotting, calcium can block certain antibiotics. If your dog is on prescription medication, talk to your vet before adding any new supplement. The risk isn't usually huge, but it's worth a 30-second check.
Can I give skin supplements alongside Apoquel or Cytopoint?
Yes, in most cases. LittleLegs Allergy & Itch chews are designed to sit alongside vet-prescribed medication, including Apoquel and Cytopoint. They support the skin barrier and coat rather than replacing treatment. Always confirm with your vet, especially when starting or changing medication.
Are dog supplements safe for puppies and senior dogs?
Many are, some aren't. Joint supplements like glucosamine are safe from 12 weeks and often recommended preventatively for large-breed puppies. Omega-3 is safe at all ages. Calming ingredients vary: some calming herbs used by other brands, such as valerian and St. John's wort, are typically not recommended for puppies under 6 months or for pregnant dogs. Our calming chews use chamomile and L-tryptophan. Senior dogs often benefit from joint, cognitive, and digestive support but may need lower doses if kidney or liver function is reduced. Always check the product label, and ask your vet for puppies, seniors, or pregnant dogs.
Safety and ingredients
Can my dog have too many supplements?
Yes. Stacking multiple products can push fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and minerals like calcium or zinc into toxic ranges. Probiotics and omega-3 are low-risk for overlap. Vitamins, minerals, and active herbs are not. If your dog is on a complete diet plus a multivitamin plus a joint product plus a calming chew, add up the totals and check against the recommended daily intake. More supplements is not better health.
Which ingredients should I avoid in dog supplements?
Avoid xylitol (toxic, sometimes hidden as a sweetener), garlic and onion powder (toxic in larger amounts), grape or raisin extract, and macadamia. Be cautious with vague labels like "proprietary blend" without listed amounts, since you don't know what dose your dog is actually getting. Be cautious with very high doses of vitamin A or D, which are toxic when stacked across multiple products. Cheap glucosamine from unverified sources can be contaminated. Pick products that name every active ingredient and show the dose.
Are natural supplements always safe for dogs?
No. "Natural" doesn't mean harmless. Many plants are toxic to dogs: tea tree oil, garlic, grape, macadamia, sago palm. Even safe herbs like valerian or St. John's wort are active compounds that can cause sedation, liver stress, or interact with medication. LittleLegs Calm & Balance Chews use chamomile and L-tryptophan, not valerian. Essential oils are concentrated and often unsafe. Dose matters with everything natural. The right question isn't "is it natural" but "is the dose right for my dog and is it from a manufacturer that tests their batches."
What are the side effects of dog supplements?
Most are mild when dosed correctly: loose stool, reduced appetite, slight drowsiness with some sedating calming products (our calming chews are formulated to promote calm without sedation). Serious side effects come from overdose, contamination, or interaction with medication, and can include vomiting, lethargy, or changes in liver or kidney values. Start a new supplement at the lower end of the recommended dose for the first week to see how your dog responds. Stop and call the vet if you see vomiting, diarrhea more than 24 hours, lethargy, or behavioral changes.
What is in the calming chews?
LittleLegs Calm & Balance Chews use chamomile and L-tryptophan as the active ingredients. They are formulated to promote calm behavior without sedation or drowsiness, and they work cumulatively: give them daily for about 6 weeks before judging the effect. They're made for daily use or as needed during stressful or overwhelming situations. Never expect instant results from any calming supplement.
What is in the Allergy & Itch chews?
Eight working ingredients for daily skin and coat support. LittleLegs Allergy & Itch chews combine MSM and Boswellia serrata for everyday skin comfort, micro-encapsulated omega-3 fish oil (EPA and DHA) and evening primrose oil for skin and coat condition, turmeric (curcumin) and Sophora japonica as plant botanicals, and colostrum and Biolex MB40 beta-glucans from brewer's yeast cell walls for a normal immune response. Each bag is 180 g with 60 soft chews. If itching is severe or sudden, see a vet first; supplements support the skin, they don't treat acute disease.
About LittleLegs
What is LittleLegs?
LittleLegs is a Danish dog wellness brand (littlelegs.dk) built by dog people, working with European veterinarians on every formulation. We make three daily wellness chews: Calm & Balance Chews (chamomile and L-tryptophan) for calming, Allergy & Itch chews for skin and coat support, and Hip & Joint Chews (glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and green-lipped mussel) for mobility. LittleLegs holds a 4.4-star Trustpilot rating. The chews are formulated for daily use, not as quick fixes: evidence-backed ingredients at meaningful doses, not fillers and marketing.
What quality standards do LittleLegs chews meet?
LittleLegs products are produced to EU food-safety standards. We work with manufacturers that batch-test for contaminants and can provide documentation on request. Every active ingredient is named on the label with its purpose, with no proprietary blends and no hidden doses.
Why chews and not tablets or powder?
Because dogs actually eat them. The biggest reason supplements don't work is that they don't get given consistently. Owners forget, or the dog refuses powders mixed in food. A LittleLegs chew tastes like a treat, which removes that whole problem. Daily compliance is what makes a supplement work, and a treat format makes daily compliance easy.
Are LittleLegs products vet-developed?
Yes. LittleLegs formulations are developed in collaboration with European veterinarians. Every ingredient is named on the label with its function. We don't use vague "proprietary blends" or hide doses. If you want to share a label with your own vet before starting, we recommend it, especially if your dog is on medication.
Orders and delivery
How long does delivery take?
3-5 business days within Denmark for most orders. Orders ship with PostNL, PostNord, or Bring depending on your address. You'll get a tracking link as soon as your order ships. We can't guarantee exact carrier times, but most packages land in that window. If your order hasn't moved after 5 business days, email us at info@littlelegs.dk or WhatsApp us at +45 77 22 58 64 and we'll check with the carrier.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free on all subscriptions and on orders of 2 or more bags. For single-bag one-time orders, a standard shipping rate is added at checkout based on your address. The cost is shown before you pay, so there are no surprises.
How much do LittleLegs chews cost?
A single bag is 271,95 DKK. Multi-bag one-time orders are discounted: 10% off 2 bags, 15% off 3 bags, and 25% off 4 bags (buy 3, get 1 free). Subscriptions are cheaper again: 20% off on a monthly plan, which works out to under 4 kr per treat. All prices are shown in your local currency at checkout.
Which countries do you ship to?
We ship within Denmark and to most EU countries. Available destinations and rates are shown at checkout once you enter your address. If your country isn't listed, contact us and we'll see what's possible.
Can I track my order?
Yes. As soon as your order ships, you get an email with a tracking link. You can follow the package the whole way to your door. If the tracking hasn't updated for several days, contact us and we'll chase the carrier.
Subscription
How does the subscription work?
You pick a delivery frequency (every month, every 2 months, or every 3 months) and your products are sent automatically on that schedule. Each delivery is free, and your card is charged before each shipment. You'll get an email reminder before each charge so you have time to skip, change, or pause if needed.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Log into your account on littlelegs.dk with the email you used to order, go to "My Subscriptions," and cancel from there. No phone calls, no questions. You can also pause instead of canceling if you just need a break. If you have trouble, email info@littlelegs.dk or WhatsApp us at +45 77 22 58 64 and we'll usually get back to you within 24 hours.
Can I change my delivery frequency?
Yes. Log into your account, go to "My Subscriptions," and switch between monthly, every 2 months, or every 3 months at any time.
Can I skip or pause a delivery?
Yes. From your account dashboard, you can skip a single delivery or pause your subscription. Useful if you're traveling, have a stockpile, or just need a break. Resume whenever you want, no fees.
What discount do I get with a subscription?
Subscription discounts are tied to frequency: 20% off every order on a monthly subscription, 15% off on every 2 months, and 10% off on every 3 months. The discount applies to your first order and every order after, so there's no introductory trick where the price jumps later.
Returns and guarantee
What's your return policy?
You have 14 days from delivery to return unopened, unused, sealed bags for a refund, which is your standard EU consumer right. Once we've received and approved the return, the refund is back on your original payment method within 10 business days. You pay the return shipping unless we've agreed otherwise. Sale items and gift cards can't be returned. For hygiene reasons, we can't accept returns of opened bags. Email info@littlelegs.dk to start a return.
What is the 60-day satisfaction guarantee?
If you've followed the feeding guide daily for 60 days and don't see a positive difference in your dog, the LittleLegs 60-day satisfaction guarantee means you can get your money back. Contact us between day 60 and day 75 from delivery at info@littlelegs.dk. We'll send a short questionnaire to confirm the routine, and we may ask for simple documentation like photos or a short log. Then we refund. This is on top of your standard 14-day right of withdrawal, not instead of it.
My dog won't eat the chews. Can I get a refund?
Email us at info@littlelegs.dk and tell us what happened. Unopened bags can be returned within 14 days. For opened bags, we'll ask a couple of short questions about flavor, texture, and routine, and we'll find a solution together. We'd rather sort it out than have a customer with a bag the dog won't touch.
